What: Get Up! Stand Up! A fundraiser for Jamaica‘s orphans Where: Lucky Bar When: March 21, 8 p.m. Tickets: $12, available in advance at Dab Gallery, and Style Bridge

Victoria‘s music fans will come together on March 21 to Get up! Stand Up! at Lucky Bar, and all for a good cause. The night of spoken word, hip-hop, reggae and contests will raise money for the Blossom Gardens orphanage in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Featured performers include Calgary-based “da lyrical pitbull” Wakefield Brewster, a hip hop and spoken word artist, and Victoria’s Anushka Kush and Mindil Beach Markets.

March 21 is also the annual International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

For “Get up! Stand up!” organizer Jayde Farand, the event offers an opportunity to combine her human rights advocacy and her love of local entertainment.

“This event has it all,” said Farand. “Entertainment featuring a blend of soul-sparking, intoxicating and powerful urban hip hop, spoken word and reggae, fun contests and much more. By joining us at this event, everyone will have the chance to celebrate the Elimination of Racism while also donating to orphaned little ones in Jamaica who are deeply in need.

Blossom Gardens is a temporary home for children from birth to eight years of age who have become wards of the state. The home is licensed to accommodate 75 children, but numbers have been as high as 87. With a staff of only four, the orphanage often depends on volunteers to offer extra support.

Sharon Melville is a nursing student at UVic who plans on volunteering at the orphanage in April. While on a practicum at the Victoria Women’s Transition House, Melville met Farand, a human rights advocate, event organizer and counselor for the Transition House.

“When Sharon shared that she hoped to raise money to bring with her to support the orphanage, my heart senses — kind of like spidey senses — went off and immediately I began to envision an event that would raise awareness and funds, as well as be a celebration of local talent,” said Farand.

Participants will also get a chance to exercise their limbo and dancing skills through different contests. All proceeds will go directly to Blossom Gardens orphanage.
