Chairperson candidates debate the issues of next week’s UVSS election

Partying and lobbying took centre stage in the debate between the two candidates running for chairperson in the upcoming UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) elections.

Bright minds, bold ideas

If you’ve got a great idea, UVic wants to hear from you. UVic’s Innovation and Development Corporation (IDC) is launching a new entrepreneurial competition for students and researchers across Vancouver Island. The Ideas Competition challenges faculty, staff and students at UVic, Camosun College and other Island academic institutions to compete for over $18,000 in cash prizes.

Independents offer change

Four independent candidates are running in this year’s UVic Students’ Society (UVSS) elections. The Martlet goes one-on-one to find out what these candidates are about.

UVic curlers rock past bureaucracy to compete

Tough competition optional. That’s the motto of the recently created UVic Curling Club. Jessica Page, Mark Wright, and Grayson Hall started the Curling Club in October as a place for students to learn to curl and to improve their existing curling skills by competing in a casual, friendly atmosphere. “This was our way of creating a club so that everybody could get a chance to try and see how fun it was,” said Page. “It’s more fun just enjoying being out there and learning about the game as opposed to really being competitive about it,” said Wright. Every Sunday the club meets at the Victoria Curling Club from 8 to 10 p.m. to compete amongst the club’s 12 teams of four. The skills of the members range from the most basic beginner to people who have been curling for years.
