For those ready to specialize in the art of commerce, UVic has gone one step further. Please welcome the new Doctorate of Business, brought to you by UVic’s Faculty of Business.
Focusing on small classes and unique opportunities to study abroad, the program seeks to attract “highly-motivated individuals that have a keen interest in contributing to the cutting edge of what we know about managing in the global economy,” said Anthony Goerzen, who will oversee the doctoral program.
Students who choose UVic for their PhD will have opportunities for mentorship with UVic Business’ faculty — “highly productive researchers,” according to Goerzen.
Another unique aspect of the new UVic program is its International Fellowship component. Goerzen says the fellowships will allow students to travel abroad to “improve their appreciation for the international management questions they are studying.”
The program is structured to be completed in four years. Students are required to take 10 courses – six in Theoretical and Empirical Foundation topics, and four in Advanced Theory and Methods – in the first two years of their programs. After students complete their course work, years three and four are dedicated to working on their thesis.
Throughout the PhD program, students will receive instruction and work opportunities in the teaching field, preparing a student for a potential academic business career.
Pre-requisites include a Masters degree in a related field – preferably, a Masters in Business Administration – and business experience. The application deadline for admission in September 2010 is Feb. 15, 2010.
The committed and talented few students who are accepted into the doctoral program (no more than four will be admitted per year) will become tomorrow’s international business leaders, searching for what Goerzen calls the “solutions to the questions that emerge as our economies continue to internationalize.”
