Join Claire Ryder as she demonstrates the ancient art of marbling: painting colours atop thickened water. The results are intricate, vivid, and natural, and the technique mimics water flow. The clearly defined movements of colour transfer cleanly onto paper or fabric. Participants will bring home one marbled fabric piece and one paper marble painting on paper. Wear comfy clothes so you can relax and get a little messy!

Victoria Poetry Project: Tongues of Fire feat. Shahin Mohammadi
Tongues of Fire is an open mic for spoken word where performers get a maximum of five minutes to unleash themselves. Shahin Mohammadi is a featured performer who most slam fans will recognize. As an artist of many talents who pursues teaching, poetry, and music, Mohammadi represented the Victoria Slam team in 2015 at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word in Saskatoon. Come get inspired and share, or simply listen and enjoy. This is an all-ages event with liquor available for purchase.

Christian Bök reads from The Xenotext
Christian Bök won the Canadian Griffin Poetry Prize in 2002 for his collection Eunoia, a groundbreaking, boldly experimental text that reimagined the role of vowels and became an international bestseller. Now Bök is back with part one of his monumental project The Xenotext, for which he has encoded a poem into the genome of a germ, one that then builds a protein to encode another poem. Ultimately, Bök hopes to insert this poem into a deathless bacterium and create a poem to survive the apocalypse. This is a literary event not to be missed!

The Prettys, Did You Die, Sure, Ye Ye Umbra
Welcome to a showcase of a variety of dark pop rock. The Prettys are a Vancouver band with a blend of hard rock vocals and trippy pop sounds that they like to call “dark glam proto-punk.” Did You Die is another mainland group delivering shoegaze with a grungy side. Sure is a local pop punk band that’s been making the scene, while Ye Ye Umbra is brand new and features members from Jons, Formidable Liquorice and Schoolgirl.

Wyrd Distro is a subset of Weird Canada that works to bring experimental Canadian music right to your door. Experience their good taste firsthand by witnessing Montreal artist Katherine Kline, from a duo called Dreamcatcher, who specializes in hip-hop electronic throb. Mourning Coup is a metaphysical music project from Vancouver with a modern sound that suggests ancestral roots. Magneticring is a solo project, also from Vancouver, focused on trancey deep soundscapes. Of course, local favourite Cosy Father joins the bill to offer angelic vocal depth to the whole shebang.

The B.C. NDP women’s caucus brings you a women’s leadership training session accompanied by a fundraiser lunch.
