UVSS hosts week of activities starting Wednesday Sept. 5
There will be plenty of reasons to step into the Student Union Building (SUB) during your time as a UVic student — maybe you need your fourth coffee of the day, you need to print a 20-page essay before class in 10 minutes, or you’re attending a student politics board meeting (OK, probably not that one).
But none of those reasons will likely be as fun as heading to the SUB this week for Campus Kick-Off: four days of events, music, and entertainment provided by the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS).
In fact, there are so many events happening from Wednesday, Sept. 5, through to Friday, Sept. 7, that it’s hard to figure out what’s going on when and where. Fear not: here’s our breakdown of the week’s festivities.
Sept. 5 — Free food and more free food
The day kicks off with a Free Pancake Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., with gluten-free options as well. After that, you can peruse the Local Vendors who will be selling their merchandise outside of the SUB from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. And don’t bother going anywhere for lunch — the UVSS is hosting a Free Hot Dog BBQ at midday (while supplies last). You can listen to the Bands on the Roof play, also beginning at 12 p.m., and then head to the 19+ Welcome Back DJ party in Felicita’s from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. Oh, and the Beer Garden at Felicita’s is open all day.
Sept. 6 — Carnival capers
The big sell of Thursday is the Carnival happening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The local vendors, bands, and beer gardens are all still there, too, alongside a Farmer’s Market and foodtrucks, but the Carnival adds inflatables, an obstacle course, and a human whack-a-mole game. There are evening-time activities, too — head to the Quad at 9 p.m. for a Free Movie showing of Grease, then head to Felicita’s afterwards for Karaoke. The Martlet will not be partaking in the latter event, for the benefit of everyone.
Sept. 7 — Final festivities
Campus kick-off finishes on Friday, which is why it’s the biggest day of them all. Along with another day of beer gardens, bands on the roof, and local vendors, Thunderfest kicks off at 12 p.m. Hosted by Vikes Nation and the UVSS, you can meet your campus varsity teams, learn more about upcoming games, and peruse any of the nearly 50 booths for giveaways and information about different campus clubs and events (including the Martlet!). After that, you can follow the crowd to watch Men’s Soccer play their home opener — last year, a record 3 300 students went. Party after the Vikes win (hopefully) by heading to the SUB. You can go to the all-ages Back in Black Light Party in Vertigo or the 19+ Blue and Gold After-Party in Felicita’s.
Check out all the events on Facebook for more information, and make sure to say hello to the Martlet, in SUB B011, when you stop by!
