Your essential guide for visiting campus this summer
Stepping onto campus during the summer term can be a stark contrast from the chaos of September to April. But students aren’t the only ones leaving for the summer, as many of UVic’s services are also on their summer break.
Whether you’re taking summer courses, visiting CARSA, or enjoying the campus grounds, this is everything you’ll need to know when visiting UVic from now until the end of August.
Food Services
Many of UVic’s Food Services have significantly reduced their hours for the summer. Until June 30, the Cove is open daily 7 a.m.–10:30 a.m. for breakfast and 11 a.m.–2 p.m. for lunch. In July, the Cove will be open daily 7 a.m.–7 p.m., including a salad bar from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. However, they will have reduced hours from July 1 to 3. Most food outlets in Mystic Market will be closed this summer except for the General Store, which is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m.–3 p.m. UVic Food Services currently has their hours posted for June and July, with August’s schedule slated to be online by early July.
The SUB
The SUB has a wide variety of services open for the summer, most of which are keeping their regular hours. The SUB itself is open Monday to Friday 7 a.m.–9 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday from 7 a.m.–8 p.m., except from Saturday July 1 to Monday July 3, when the SUB will be closed. The majority of the services are only open Monday to Friday, with the exception of Campus Dental, which is open on Saturdays. The Info Booth is open 10 a.m.–3 p.m. for any questions or concerns you may have. For all your food and coffee needs, Bean There Cafe is open 7 a.m.–5 p.m., The Grill 9 a.m.–4 p.m., and Health Food Bar 10 a.m.–4 p.m. SUBText and Zap Copy also remain open 10 a.m.–4 p.m, as well as the Campus Pharmacy from 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
Cinecenta/Munchie Bar
Looking to relax and watch a good movie? Cinecenta offers shows Wednesday through to Sunday. While you’re there — or if you’re just hanging out in the SUB — visit the Munchie Bar for some fresh popcorn or hand poured espresso, open Monday/Tuesday 8 a.m.– 4 p.m, Wednesday to Friday 8 a.m.– 7:30 p.m, and Saturday/Sunday 4:30 p.m.– 7:30 p.m. From the coming-of-age classic Stand By Me to A.V. Rockwell’s dramatic directorial debut A Thousand and One, Cinecenta offers something for everyone this summer. Be sure to keep a lookout on their website for August’s upcoming movie schedule.
CARSA
Need to burn off some energy in the weight room, take a yoga class, or go rock climbing? CARSA’s summer hours are now in effect. They’re open Monday to Friday 6:30 a.m.–10 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday from 7 a.m.–9 p.m. However, access to the climbing wall is limited to Monday to Friday 4 p.m.–8 p.m. and Saturday 3 p.m.–8 p.m. Be sure to check out CARSA’s wide variety of drop-in options, group fitness and dance classes, among many other programs listed on their website.
McKinnon Building
The McKinnon Building has several fitness options for the summer. There is a 25-metre pool, a weight room, a 2 500-seat triple gymnasium, and a dance studio. The McKinnon Building’s summer hours, including the pool and weight room, are Monday to Thursday 6:30 a.m.–10 p.m., Friday 6:30 a.m.–9 p.m., and Saturday/Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. They also offer a variety of aquatic programs, including water polo, synchronized swimming, and adult swim classes.
Libraries
Both the McPherson Library and the Diana M. Priestly Law Library are open this summer. The McPherson Library is open Monday to Friday 7:30 a.m.–9 p.m. and Saturday/Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Special Collections is open Monday to Friday 10:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. but unfortunately, BiblioCafé is closed for the summer. Meanwhile, the Law Library is only open Monday to Friday 9 a.m.–5 p.m, and is closed on the weekends.
