On and off campus places stroll through fall scenery
Hours spent sitting in lecture halls takes a toll on everyone, so if you need to stretch your legs or get your nature fix on a time crunch, we’ve got you covered.
Although the final glorious summer days are slipping away fast, there is lots to be enjoyed about autumn on the island. Before the days of rain and cold settle in, there are plenty of gorgeous fall-scapes to be explored, and many of them are right here on campus.
Alumni Chip Trail – For when you need a bit of quiet
To get a break from the hustle and bustle of campus, you can take a walk along the infamous Alumni Chip Trail: a 2.9 kilometer loop with both paved and dirt pathways perfect for strolling or jogging. On the trail, you can enjoy a tranquil walk among the trees, step on crunchy fall leaves to your heart’s content, and discover sides of campus you have never seen.
Finnerty Gardens – For when you need to de-stress
If you are pressed for time and in need of a walk as a brain break, Finnerty Gardens is the ideal place for a mental reset. The lush gardens provide an abundance of native plants, heartwarming bench dedications, and opportunities to spot wildlife darting around in the trees. Located right beside the Multifaith Centre, these gardens are only a quick dash away if you need to find reprieve from the fluorescent evils of giant academic buildings on campus.
The Quad – For when you only have 10 minutes
A short stroll around the iconic UVic quad can be the perfect way to stretch your legs between classes during those long days on campus. Admire the gorgeous array of yellows and oranges while fall settles in and take a moment to appreciate all of the greenery right at the heart of campus –– we often take it for granted.
Mystic Vale – For when seeing some cute dogs would brighten your day
Dog lovers of campus should head over to the Multifaith Centre on Wednesday afternoons to cuddle up at the weekly Pet Cafe. However, if it is any other day of the week or you haven’t had enough puppy cuddles, keep strolling around Ring Road until you get to Mystic Vale. There are almost always dogs romping around on walks in the woods, and they are happy to say hello.
Cadboro Bay Beach – For when you have some time on your hands
A long break between classes does not have to be spent aimlessly wandering the SUB. Although the hill on Sinclair Rd may seem intimidating, the gorgeous Cadboro Bay awaits at the bottom. If you have time and need a break from schoolwork, the soothing sounds of the waves are sure to calm you down. Soak in the crisp autumn air with a nice stroll along the beach before the dreaded winter weather is upon us.
Haro Woods Park – When you need a break from campus
School can start to feel all consuming during this time of year, especially as midterm season is fast approaching. If you want to reconnect with nature and forget about your studies for a little while, take a walk through Haro Woods Park. Start at the bus loop and head down Finnerty Rd to find a lovely tangle of trails that will transport you into your own little world. This is another great spot to marvel at the gorgeous fall colours Victoria has to offer, and delight in some relaxing nature time.
