ART
9th Annual Integrate Arts Festival
It’s August already?! Sadly, yes. But don’t fret; just because summer’s drawing to a close doesn’t mean the fun’s going to stop. The Integrate Arts Society has an entire weekend of cool events planned, all in celebration of Victoria’s vibrant art scene. The festival is going to be a blast, and — perhaps more importantly — it’s FREE!
Aug. 28–30; event times vary.

COMMUNITY
Astounding Amphibians
It’s not easy being green, but that doesn’t make it any less astounding. Make a stop at the Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary for a jam-packed afternoon learning all about our amphibious friends. And with a puppet show on the agenda, who knows . . . maybe Kermit will make an appearance.
Wednesday, Aug. 19, noon to 3 p.m.
Swan Lake Christmas Hill Nature Sanctuary, Swan Lake Rd.
Admission by donation.
Endless Summer Vintage and Craft Fair
I know I said summer’s drawing to a close earlier, but this fair says it’s endless, so believe who you want to believe. There will be a number of local artisans and crafty types displaying their wares, so check it out!
Saturday, Aug. 22, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
United Centennial Church, 612 David St.
MUSIC
Super Summer Jam II
Hip-hop fans, rejoice. THEESatisfaction makes the trip from Seattle to bring their classic stylings to Victoria for a free show featuring many others at Centennial Square. And that’s not all: the beats keep comin’ for Super Summer Jam After Dark at the Copper Owl, featuring Dia-Nos and CFUV’s own musicofmymind.
Thursday, Aug. 27, Centennial Square at 5:30 p.m.; Copper Owl at 10 p.m.
Admission: Centennial Square show is free; Copper Owl is $8.
Victoria Anarchist Bookfair Fundraiser Concert
Books and punk: what a winning combination. If you want to support a local institution and get a little rowdy, the Victoria Anarchist Bookfair Collective could use some help. Featuring the metallic anarchy of Husk, Infantile Dissention, Tenchu, and Iskra, all proceeds of this megaton show will go towards the Collective.
Friday, Aug. 14, 7 p.m.
Intrepid Theatre, 2-1609 Blanshard St.
Admission: $5-10, all ages welcome.
THEATRE
Free-B Film Festival
This August-long event is a fantastic outing for film buffs and casual viewers alike, as Victoria Film Festival brings a bevy of classic cinema to Beacon Hill Park, the Legislative Lawn, and Broadmead Village. Batman (holy ‘60s aesthetic, Batman! POW! WHAM!) and The Princess Bride start the month off on Aug. 7 and 8, respectively. Show up early, bring a comfy chair . . . and maybe even some bug spray. The mosquitoes are vicious this time of year.
Films screen every weekend at 9 p.m.
Films and locations are available at freebfilmfest.com
Admission: free.
Strath Comedy Open Mic
Promising to go for as long as you do, the Maple Room at the Strathcona will be host to a variety of aspiring standups the evening of Aug. 18. If you think you’re the next Jerry Seinfeld or Amy Schumer, and have three minutes of material to workshop, this’ll be the place to be. Open mics occur every third Tuesday of the month!
Tuesday, Aug. 18; signup at 7:30 p.m., doors at 8 p.m.
Strathcona Hotel, 919 Douglas St.
Admission: $5 at the door.
