The clinic’s second office is now open in the SUB
Campus Dental has recently expanded to a new location to help serve more patients.
On Jan. 25, the dental centre opened a new, updated office close to its original one at the north end of the Student Union Building. The space was formerly occupied by Campus Hair Design.
Marcia Clarke is the receptionist and office manager at Campus Dental. She told the Martlet that the expansion was prompted by the need to reduce new patient wait times. Campus Dental opened a sister clinic in Cadboro Bay three years ago to help with the wait, but the distance made things difficult.
“They’re different databases,” explained Clarke. “It wasn’t an easy flow.”
Both Campus Dental offices, which are steps from each other with entrances into the Munchie Bar seating area, have connected booking and charting systems, said Clarke. Wait times have improved for patients who no longer need to go to Cadboro Bay to seek treatment if Campus Dental is too busy, she explained.
“Before, we were looking at a three or four month wait for a new patient request for a cleaning. Now, depending on the week, it’s within two to four weeks, which is great,” said Clarke.
Clarke said that renovations for the office took four months to complete, and the planning process took more than a year. The new space has modern finishes and features a colourful accent wall.
“We really wanted it to be just like UVic — young, fresh, bright, and cheery,” said Clarke. “Just full of hope and dreams like all the students here.”
Clarke explained that, though the office is located on campus and serves students and staff, it’s open to the general public, too. “We do implant crowns, and everything from fillings and extractions, veneers, and bridges,” said Clarke. The office also offers clear aligners called Clear Correct, though these aren’t covered under the UVSS student dental plan.
Serena Gardner is a dental hygienist who has been working with Dr. Van Gyn, the owner of Campus Dental, for most of her career. She says she feels excited about the expanded office. “I’m loving it. It’s so bright and open.”
Her patient Marin Levi also told the Martlet that she feels the same about the new space. “It’s great. It’s really bright over here. That’s the first thing I noticed,” she said.
Levi has been coming to Campus Dental for four years. She’s not a UVic student, but enjoys coming to campus for her dental appointments. “I never see [campus], so I never would have a reason to come into the [SUB] and see how the school is layed out.”
