Bigger and better things are happening in the Martlet this academic year thanks to your vote last February

If you pick up a copy in the next month, or stop by our website, you might notice something — the Martlet is looking a little different. But don’t worry, we’re still the campus paper you know and love; we’ve just made a few small changes!
Thanks to your vote earlier this year to support our first fee increase in 27 years, we’ve been able to create so many more paid positions for UVic students. That means more of the news coverage you rely on to stay informed, and more of the independent journalism you rely on to hold our campus institutions accountable to the students, staff, and faculty who make this university so special.
At a time where AI and wide-ranging cuts threaten paid opportunities in the arts and humanities sectors, it also means more money going right back into the pockets of students through more plentiful, and better paid, part-time positions to learn and hone valuable journalism and writing skills before graduation. This means an investment in UVic students for years to come — this year, our fee increase has only just kicked in. Future volumes of the Martlet will have a larger budget to do even more with — maybe even the return of biweekly print!
We have also expanded our sections online and in print, with the addition of a brand-new Science & Research section. This will be your new go-to spot for interviews with faculty and students about their research, as well as other stories about science, technology, and climate.
The confusingly named “UVic Life” had become a little muddled in its purpose over the years — online, it was still called “Sports & Lifestyle.” (We know, not great.) So, we’ve given Sports the dedicated section online that it deserves, and your favourite student advice, listicles, and lighter campus fare can still be found in “Campus.”
In the coming months, you can also look forward to monthly events to engage with the Martlet and learn more about what we do, why we do it, how it can help you, and how you can get involved through regular events being planned by our brand-new Outreach Coordinator, and some extra special programming that our undergraduate Writer-in-Residence will be putting on!
So, welcome back! Now that regular classes have resumed, we can’t wait to share with you all that we’ve been cooking up. So long for now.
