For a lot of us, the summer comes with more free time than we can find during the school year. It can be a chance to catch up with friends or maybe try out a new hobby. If you’re looking to take advantage of your spare time this summer while staying active, CARSA offers a variety of ongoing programs, single classes, and drop-in activities that you still have time to sign up for this July and August.
From intense cardio workouts to relaxing yoga sessions, here are just eight of your options.
Fitness and Weight Centre 101
If you are looking to start going to the gym, Fitness and Weight Centre 101 is a great introduction to the equipment available at CARSA. This introductory class will help you become familiar with CARSA’s strength and cardio machines and provide an opportunity to ask general questions about fitness. It’s the perfect course for anyone who finds the gym intimidating or is wondering how to start working out.
This hour-long course is offered four times throughout July and August. It costs just under $30 and is currently open for registration on the Vikes Active Living website.
A Class in Sass
If you’re looking for a fun way to stay active or you’re hoping to improve your dance moves now that clubs are open again, A Class in Sass might be perfect for you. The program is inspired by modern artists like Beyoncé and blends a variety of dance styles, from burlesque to hip-hop.
This summer, the program runs from July 27 – Aug. 17 and classes are held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evenings. At $39.05 for the four sessions, it’s also a great deal.
Fencing
CARSA also offers two eight-week fencing programs. For those with little to no experience with the sport, Fencing for Beginners is a great place to learn the basics. If you’re already familiar with fencing and are looking to improve your footwork or attack and defence techniques, the regular fencing program is perfect for you.
Fencing for Beginners runs from July 9 – Aug. 27 on Saturday evenings. Fencing classes for those with more experience from July 6 – Aug. 31, with the option of Saturday or Wednesday evenings. The fee for both programs is $70.48.
BLT (Butt, Legs, and Thighs Workout)
This hour-long muscle conditioning class is sure to strengthen and tone your lower body. BLT is meant to focus on areas that are more difficult to target, helping to “tone, lift, and tuck.”
If you’re interested in trying BLT, drop-in classes are held every Tuesday evening from 4:45 – 5:45 and cost $19.
Lane Swimming
Maybe you’re looking for a more relaxing, self-paced activity than a fitness class. Lane swimming is a great way to get some exercise and cool off in the hot summer months.
McKinnon pool offers lane swimming most days of the week at a variety of times, so there is a session to fit any schedule. Visit the Vikes Active Living website to register.
TRX HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training)
If you’re looking for an intense class that combines cardio and strength training, TRX HIIT has the best of both worlds. The 55-minute classes will work your muscles while burning calories. It’s a great option if you’re hoping to challenge yourself or switch up your workouts.
For $41.90, you’ll be able to attend classes every Tuesday morning from July 5–26.
De-Stress Yoga
Another more relaxing option available at CARSA is their De-Stress Yoga program. The classes focus on breathing and gentle movement to help you relax. Whether it’s summer courses, work, or just life that has you feeling overwhelmed, this class is a perfect opportunity to slow down.
The program runs from July 27 – Aug. 17, with classes on Wednesday evenings.
First Aid and CPR Certifications
For those who are interested in learning something over the summer, CARSA also offers a variety of first aid courses. Whether you’re new to first aid or need to renew your certification, there’s a course for everyone. The courses are a bit pricier, starting at $110, but you do get a certificate out of it as well as a useful skill.
Each class combines self-paced online learning and in-person instruction. The classes run Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. – 5:45 p.m. Online registration is not yet open, so keep an eye on the Vikes Active Living website to get a spot.
If none of these pique your interest, be sure to check the Vikes Active Living website for more summer programs and classes. Whether you’re looking to burn as many calories as you can or wind down after a long day at your summer job, there is something for everyone.
