Decoding costumes is a rare gift, but we’ve got it
As we head into the holiday season, the nights get longer, the seasonal events get lonelier, and the dating scene starts to feel like a pressure-cooker. With Halloween just around the corner, the Martlet is here to help.
It can be stressful to find a costume that checks all the boxes: attractive, funny, spooky, unique — the list goes on. We’ve compiled a list of relationship statuses with corresponding costume ideas to provide some inspiration, or to help you de-mask those who interest you this Oct. 31.
The ‘Single and Looking’
Costumes: Princesses, superheroes, and vampires.
These are the basic costumes for those looking for someone new. They are great conversation starters and can be easily personalized. A little plain, but who’s not a sucker for the classics? Besides, your costume is the least interesting part about you. You’ll find the one soon, with or without the glass slipper. But, I mean, if the shoe fits…
The ‘Situationships’
Costumes: The Joker & Harley Quinn, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Who doesn’t love a cynical couple? The intentions behind these costumes can be difficult to decipher. If you’re unsure if it’s too soon to do a couple’s costume, attempt Mr. and Mrs. Smith. If your relationship goes south, guess what?! You were dressed up as a couple out to kill each other, anyways. And if you’re single and looking, be cautious when approaching anyone in these costumes this Halloween. Approach the Joker, and you might have to face Harley’s wrath.
The ‘Single and *Not* Looking’
Costumes: Mario & Luigi, Napoleon Dynamite, or any animal onesie.
These costumes will guarantee a good time. Taking the friendly route, you’ll hopefully avoid the cheesy pick-up lines and prompt good conversation only. If you’re sick of the fuss of finding the perfect costume, you can’t go wrong with these. Make sure to execute these costumes with confidence; even though you’re not looking — wink wink — you might just attract a Princess Peach.
The ‘Locked in’ Relationships
Costumes: Barbie & Ken, Marge & Homer Simpson, and Jim & Pam.
You’ve got to be in a pretty serious relationship to pull these couples costumes off — you can’t have one without the other. C’mon, who is Ken without his Barbie? These are also a great debut if you want people to know about your new relationship. Plus, they take some serious effort and planning to execute, so making your outfits could be a great date night activity. Bake some cookies while you’re at it, and make all the singles cringe.
Hopefully now you feel prepared to tackle your upcoming Hallo-weekend endeavors, whether you’re finding your Prince Charming, confirming (or abandoning) your situationship, avoiding pick-up lines, or hard launching your new relationship. Good luck out there!
