As a result of student feedback, including a survey of 1398 respondents done earlier this year, Mystic Market now accepts debit as of July 31. Sarah Dusterbeck, Coordinator, Marketing & Communications for UVic Food Services, said in an email that they want to be responsive to students despite the possibility of longer wait times in food service lines. According to Dusterbeck, the elimination of debit at Mystic Market was a trial to gauge student response.
Dusterbeck noted that although prices will not be increasing due to new debit service, they will be increasing due to rising commodity prices which affect the entire supply chain, partially due to drought conditions in Western Canada.
