Do you think UVic is doing enough to address climate change and be sustainable? If so, what do you see happening and if not, what could UVic do better?
The information just isn’t really available for the students, I find. So, I think more awareness on the subject would be a good idea.
I feel like we do a fair amount. The bus passes are kind of nice. It kind of sucks that you don’t have a choice to opt out but it makes us use a system that we might not otherwise. I think the water bottle refill stations are good. It encourages people to not buy plastic water bottles. There is always more that we could do.
It depends on what your definition of sustainability is. If you mean a zero emissions and zero waste system, then no, but no University can be. Are we making an effort, yes. I really like the reusable water bottle stations. Those make sense. I think a positive environmental impact will have to come from everyone doing their part and it’s going to require a big change in the way you live. All these comforts you are used to are going to have to change significantly. If people really knew what they would have to give up to have a truly sustainable school then I don’t know how gung-ho they are going to be about it.
I don’t know much about what UVic is doing for sustainability but I think what they are doing for recycling is very good.
I feel like what UVic is doing for sustainability is kind of good. With the Ring Road and no cars in the middle of the ring, promoting biking, a lot of people are using their bikes, and recycling is also very good.
