Senior Staff Writer

Wage: $18.09/hour (includes 4% vacation pay)
Hours: 20 hours bi-weekly

Job Description:
The Staff Writer will be responsible for writing and completing minimum of two articles per publication, and completing one long-form feature article during their position. The Staff Writer will also be responsible for completing the following duties:
- Pitching stories and staying informed on emerging issues relevant to UVic students and community.
- Working cooperatively with other staff and the Editor-in-Chief to cover compelling issues that enhance the overall quality of the printed paper, and fill gaps in the production cycle as needed, which may include helping with editing, pitching, taking photos, or creating social media content.
- Mentoring and helping recruit Martlet volunteers.
- Following up on stories, and posting story updates to the Martlet website or social media.
- Reviewing each story concept or first draft, and working with the Design Director to identify potential graphics.
- Being aware of and implementing the Martlet’s fact-checking guidelines and conflict of interest policy.
- Attending meetings: training workshops, paper critiques, copyediting, and story meetings.
- Interviewing sources and representing the Martlet in the broader UVic community.
- Creating social media content based off of Martlet articles for the Martlet’s social media.
Qualifications:
- Strong writing, editing, and communication/interpersonal skills are essential.
- Confident working independently, and willingness to learn from constructive criticism.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines; reliability.
- Familiarity with the UVic community and/or journalism basics is an asset.
- Keen awareness of global and community issues is an asset.

Senior Staff Editor

Hours: 20 hours bi-weekly
Location: hybrid remote
Job Description:
The Staff Editor will be responsible for making the paper as errorless and factual as possible, aiding the Editor-in-Chief, and helping manage the editorial needs for all sections of the paper in a timely fashion. The Staff Editor will also support the Martlet team by filling gaps in the production cycle as needed, by pitching stories, taking photos, or helping create content based off of Martlet articles for the Martlet’s social media. Some tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Editing 8-12 stories per publication (online and print).
- Diligently fact-checking edited stories, including reviewing interview recordings and examining various source documents.
- Mentoring and helping recruit Martlet volunteers.
- Working collaboratively with all Martlet staff to plan, coordinate, and execute numerous editorial projects simultaneously.
- Ensuring stories are edited and completed on time, according to Canadian Press style and Martlet style.
- Attend meetings: training/orientation workshops, copyediting, story, and editorial meetings.
Qualifications:
- Strong editing, research, and communication skills
- Attention to detail
- Confident decision-making skills
- Excellent organizational and multitasking skills
- Ability to work under pressure, independently or collaboratively, to meet deadlines; reliable
- Experience with editing, journalism courses, and/or familiarity with the UVic community and its issues and trends is an asset
- Knowledge of Canadian Press style and Martlet style is an asset
