Two staff writer positions and one staff editor position open for four month contract
The Martlet is hiring two part-time senior staff writers and one part-time staff editor for a May to August work term.
Ideal candidates for these positions will be engaged with the UVic and broader Victoria community and have a passion for student journalism. Martlet experience is considered an asset, as is general experience with news writing, editing, and photography.
Senior Staff Writer
Two available positions.
May–August 2024: 15 hours bi-weekly at $18.09 per hour.
Victoria, BC, predominantly remote with some in-person requirements (hybrid).
Potential for contract extension into fall 2024 work term.
Staff writers collaborate with Martlet staff and the Editor-in-Chief to write quality articles, online and in print. Writers will produce 2-3 articles per publication cycle and conduct interviews and research. Writers may be assigned beats at the editor’s discretion, and are otherwise general assignment reporters. The Martlet’s coverage reflects the student and alternative focus of the paper.
Staff writers are much more than just wordsmiths: they engage with the broader UVic community, pitch their own story ideas, and work alongside other Martlet staff to create exceptional reporting. This position involves collaborating with other staff on stories, liaising with editors and volunteers, assisting the Martlet’s Design Director with images for stories, and may involve editing as required.
The right person for this role will display adaptability, creativity, a critical perspective, and an ability to take initiative.
Staff Editor
One available position.
May–August 2024: 10 hours bi-weekly at $18.09 per hour.
Victoria, BC, predominantly remote with some in-person requirements (hybrid).
Potential for contract extension into fall 2024 work term.
Editors at the Martlet make the paper as errorless and factual as possible. They are grammar experts and enjoy the challenge of sifting through articles to spot every mistake. Editors will be primarily responsible for aiding the Editor-in-Chief, and will help to manage the editorial needs for all sections of the paper (News, Culture, Opinions, Feature, and Sports/Lifestyle/Humour).
Editors will also support the team by filling gaps in the production schedule of the paper, as needed, by producing articles or helping with social media.
The ideal person for this position will have experience with editing and an eye for detail.
