The spectre of loss fell upon the UVic community the week of Oct. 25, as Anders Newman passed away in a hiking accident near Campbell River.
Newman, 18, moved to Victoria this year from Cochrane, Alta. An obituary published on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the Cochrane Times said he died doing what he loved, “hiking in the beautiful outdoors.”
“Our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends during this most difficult time. Anders was an extremely well-liked young man who had a promising future. He will be sorely missed,” said Joel Lynn, executive director of Student Services, in an announcement released by UVic.
A service was held for Newman in Cochrane on Oct. 31.
