For This Land Audain Exhibition
2014-15 Audain Professor of Contemporary Arts of the Pacific Northwest and Visual Arts MFA Jackson 2Bears will present his 2015 Audain Exhibition in the Visual Arts building, free of charge. The multimedia installation, inspired by the works of Mohawk poet Pauline Johnson and Sioux philosopher Vine Deloria Jr., is a collaboration between 2Bears, and local spoken word artist/former City of Victoria Poet Laureate Janet Rogers.
Exhibition is open until 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26.

Consumed Art Exhibition
Slide Room Gallery is a rare visitor to our events calendar, but I think this exhibition warrants mention. Consumed features artwork from prominent artists from Victoria to Ottawa, Vancouver to San Francisco, all examining the nature of consumption through a pop culture lens. Word of advice: don’t write about consumption on an empty stomach.

Oktoberfest at Oaklands w/ Bučan Bučan
Just because we’re not in Germany doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate like we’re in Germany. This festival celebrates all things Munich and Bavaria, including beer. One ticket will get you beer from Hoyne Brewing Company (one of my favs), a traditional Bavarian meal (not sure what that entails), and live music (including world-renowned accordion player Ken Beattie).

Emerging Artists Alumni Series: Music by Justin Boechler
Show some support for on-campus musical talent by attending this performance featuring School of Music alumni performers Brad Justason, Alexei Paish, Kimberley Shepherd, and Anna Shill! I don’t get out to these sorts of things that often, myself. Maybe I should reconnect with my band geek past and check it out . . .

Negură Bunget w/ Grimegod and Dynfari
Travelling all the way from Romania(!) and Iceland(!!), this trio of folk/black metal bands is ready to bring Logan’s Pub to the ground (well, hopefully not literally; people like going there). According to Heavy Metal UVic president Casey Lazar, Negură Bunget “plays a big piece of wood suspended by a rope,” whatever that means! Regardless, it’s sure to be great. Check it out.

Vikes Improv Fall Kick-off Show
You can’t make this shit up, folks — or can you? Vikes Improv is launching headfirst into their fifth year running, and they are more than excited to improvise comedic situations for your enjoyment! There will be man buns, supervillain moustaches, and mysterious Tinder dates — that is, if the Facebook page is anything to go by.

An Imperfection — A Guerilla Feature Film
Victorian film director Rasanga Weerasinghe, in collaboration with producer Rama Jabri, has filmed what they call a “guerilla-style feature” that “highlights the importance of truth, equality, and acceptance” in our connections with each other. A screening of the film will be held alongside a panel discussion featuring the cast and crew, and hosted by CHECK TV news anchor Monica Martinez.
