Back to school means back to work — but it also mean a whole host of events for students and the greater community of Victoria. Here’s a list of some free or low-cost events students can look forward to over the next few weeks of January.
Mental Health Awareness Week including a Showcase with Shane Koyczan
Join workshops, performances, yoga, dances, and even get a massage during the UVic Students’ Society Mental Health Awareness Week. Mental health affects so many of us, and this week-long inclusive event will help deepen our understanding of it. Topping things off, renowned poet Shane Koyczan will be guiding a spoken word journey deep into the realities of mental health.

Free Student Dinners
Too busy and broke to cook a good meal? Every Tuesday, the Emmanuel Baptist Church has you covered. Salads, curries, chilis, and roasts — the selfless staff of volunteers cook all the nutritious and delicious meals any student could dream of, free of charge.

Luke Wallace Live at the Mateada
A musician with a love for this coast is one of the things we need most. Why not hop on a magical boat and adventure over to Salt Spring Island for an intimate concert with local legend Luke Wallace. He’ll be playing at the Mateada, which serves energizing yerba mates and healing elixirs to keep you calm and carrying on as Wallace leads you to experience the lifeline of this coastline.

Victoria Chinese New Year Gala
Had your high expectations met with a mediocre New Year’s party? Fear not — the Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration is still to come. Hosted by the Victoria Chinese Community Association, the event will feature performances by Chinese community artists, comedians, actors, singers and dancers. Don’t miss out. This grand welcoming for the year of the pig is bound to be big.

UVic Vikes Hockey
Hockey fans: come get your craving cross-checked with some good old UVic Vikes action! Support UVic’s hockey team and have fun doing it. The coming months are jam-packed with opportunities to see those pucks fly through the five hole, starting with two more games in January.
